Blacksmithing has a long and very interesting history from the early days of horseshoeing to being “Under the Spreading Chestnut Tree” come and learn the basics that you can learn in a two-day class. No, you won’t be a blacksmith when the class is over but you will have ample opportunity to see if this hobby is for you without the financial investment of a blacksmith shop. Class size limited to 9

During the time that fighting men wore Chain mail it was the best protection against cuts and slashes. The most popular pattern was the English 4 in 1 pattern. Learn the basics of making chain mail, and you too could be next person to make armor for your self or friends. The Mandrel is included. Class size limited to 8

October 29 8:00 am to 4:30pm Beginning Tablet Weaving (Inkle Loom)
KC RenFest Booth 651
This is a relaxed, hands-on workshop for beginners, covering basic tablet weaving techniques. I will show you how to string up a loom and try out a few basic techniques. During the two-session class you will choose a project to make in class -- a sample band, a set of bookmarks, or a tubular neckpiece. No previous weaving experience needed. The loom and all supplies are included in the class price. Class size limited to 6

Learn how to make lace as it was done in the time of Queen Elizabeth. You will have time to complete at least 1 plaid bookmark while learning the basics of Bobbin lace. A second bookmark can be completed if the time allows. Min. age, 13; class size 8 students. Cost $30.00 Oct. 29

October 29 8:30am to 4:30pm Building a Shaving Horse

This class will build a portable shaving horse similar in design to the one Roy Underhill makes. You will be making this horse out of 2 X 12's and all materials for the shaving horse are included.

KC RenFest Booth 651
Spinning wool into yarn or thread was once a daily chore. I find spinning a rewarding and relaxing experience. You will be introduced to the spinning process using a drop spindle and a spinning wheel. Various types of fiber will be sampled during this class. A drop spindle is included.

November 5 8:30am to 4:30pm Blackwork and Felt Class

In the morning make a holder for your sewing needles while learning the art and history of blackwork. The afternoon will be devoted to learning how to felt 2 bars of soap and applying a needle felted design to 1 bar of soap and a splash of color to the other. Min. age, 13; class size 20. .

October 29 8:30am to 4:30pm Inkle Weaving Class

Inkle weaving is a type of warp-faced weaving. Many colorful patterns can be created by raising or lowering the warp yarns. 'Inkle" is the old English term for a narrow woven band and is referred to in Shakespeare's Love's Labor’s Lost. This is a good beginning weaving class in which you will weave a band suitable for bookmarks, a dog collar or leash, a belt or guitar strap, or even a small purse. Students will learn how to warp an inkle loom and to weave their own design. No experience needed.
